What is Matcha?
The first thought in your mind is likely, what is matcha? Matcha is green tea, finely ground and in a powder format. The tea leaves that produce matcha are grown in the shade, which result in a darker green color and more amino acids.
As a blogger, I have the opportunity to review products at no cost in exchange for an honest review. Tomoson is a site filled with opportunities for established bloggers. I hadn’t visited them in a while. Conveniently, when I logged in after being away, I noticed that Kiss Me Organics was offering a complimentary bag of their USDA ORGANIC Culinary Grade Matcha to qualified bloggers and was intrigued. I applied to review the product and was accepted.
I began to research matcha as I knew nothing of it at the point I applied for the review except what was listed on the bag. I was very impressed by the lists of benefits found around the web.
Matcha has been around for centuries and has recently made a resurgence and spread to popular culture. Matcha is most widely known for it’s ability to boost metabolism and increase focus. It is found in various health food products such as cereal or energy bars.
Kiss Me Organics USDA Organic Culinary Grade Matcha delivers 137 times the antioxidants of brewed green tea. Matcha contains significantly more antioxidants than superfoods such as blueberries, pomegranates, orange juice and spinach and dark chocolate.
Does Matcha Contain Caffeine?
Matcha does contain caffeine. However, the caffeine in matcha versus coffee is much easier for your body to break down, as it’s released much more slowly into your bloodstream versus the crash and burn effect realized from coffee.
Me and two of my colleagues all tried the Kiss Me Organics USDA Organic Culinary Grade Matcha on the morning after I received my complimentary product for review.
My boss did not feel the effects, but he did not dislike the taste. He added 1/2 tsp. to his tea. I accidentally added a whole teaspoon in my tea. I did notice it affected the flavor, but I felt energized without the jittery feeling that I’m left with after drinking 2-3 cups per coffee in the morning (which I’ve quit by the way).
My colleague (at the time) Angela, who suffers from diagnosed Fibromyalgia shared her thoughts after mixing in 1/2 tsp. into hot water. She really felt energized and shared my sentiments that there was no roller coaster effect. She made it from morning through the time she went to bed and felt “fantastic”. That’s a lot to say for someone who suffers from Fibromyalgia. By the end of the first day, she was ready to purchase Kiss Me Organics USDA Organic Culinary Grade Matcha.
I encouraged Angela to WAIT and let me know how she felt through the night and in the morning. She then told me she makes a Kale smoothie every morning and would love to borrow a scoop to add to her smoothie in the morning. I told Angela to take the bag and bring it back in the morning. Boy was I surprised when she offered to bring me a Kale smoothie as well.
The next morning, both Angela and I tried her Kale smoothie with a 1/2 tsp. of matcha. The matcha altered the flavor of her original recipe, but it still gave both of us the same amount of energy as it had the day before, without the crash and burn feeling. The next time Angela made her Kale smoothie with matcha, she added a bit of greek yogurt to sweeten it up a bit and soften the texture. Doing so not only returned the flavor of her original Kale Smoothie recipe, but made it even better tasting.
After that, she was sold. I couldn’t stop her. Angela purchased a bag of Kiss Me Organics USDA Organic Culinary Grade Matcha on Amazon and had it within a few days.
Benefits of Matcha
In addition to matcha’s metabolism boosting effects and powerful antioxidants, matcha also offers a wide array of other benefits.
The caffeine in matcha is not addictive as the caffeine in coffee is. The adrenaline SURGE experienced with caffeine triggers the addiction. With matcha, there is no surge.
Matcha is also a powerful liver detox mechanism. It helps with skin conditions such as acne, aids in weight loss by naturally boosting the metabolism, and contains vitamins, minerals, nutrients and amino acids that far exceed the levels contained in steeped green tea or a cup of joe.
Theanine, Teanin or L-Theanine is derived from the tea plant. It induces production of Dopamine, which reduces stress levels and improves memory. Green tea is said to hold the highest concentrations of Theanine, Teanin or L-Theanine. In matcha form, the concentration levels are at their highest, compared to steeped tea.
Overall Review of
While my intent was to ditch the caffeine completely, I have been enjoying matcha in my hot water and smoothies. when you purchase Kiss Me Organics USDA Organic Culinary Grade Matcha, sold exclusively on Amazon, you receive a free Organic Matcha Recipe Guide via email, which includes over 50 recipes for drinks using matcha, smoothies using matcha, matcha breakfast recipes, sweets using matcha, breads, dips and toppers containing matcha, pizza recipes with matcha, beef, soups and sides containing matcha as an ingredient as well as matcha shots. There are so many other uses for matcha, that once you discover it’s flavor profile by adding it to hot water or your favorite tea, you’ll be able to incorporate it into dishes for every meal.
The flavor of matcha is noticeable, so it’s important to understand what flavors compliment it, whether you add matcha to your favorite tea or smoothie and even breakfast lunch or dinner. The recipe guide is extremely helpful in achieving the perfect balance of flavor.
The natural and sustained release of the caffeine derived from green teas is far more pleasurable that the crash and burn effect of the caffeine derived from coffee. While I’ve only been using the Kiss Me Organics USDA Organic Culinary Grade Matcha for about a week, my normally insatiable appetite has subsided a bit and I feel less hungry.
I really like the Kiss Me Organics USDA Organic Culinary Grade Matcha. I would definitely purchase it for future use, though 1 bag will seemingly last 48 days if you drink 1/2 tsp. per day. I’ve been using it for a week, so needless to say I’ve got a few weeks to go!
